Damn my Unbelief

I wrote awhile back about an experience I had with being taught by an angel. One of the things that angel was teaching me about was an ability I have (or rather, WILL have if I overcome this weak, fleshy tabernacle and develop it), to use the light he showed me how to emit from myself – to cast out illness and impurities in the things around me. I explained it here:

“The angel continued taking me to from place to place to teach me and help me practice this power and spiritual gift. When I “activated” this power, all the people around me that were corrupt or unable to withstand it were instantly banished.  I’m not sure how or where they were transported to, but they were “pushed” back beyond a certain radius from me because of their inability to withstand that light and glory that came from me. This power not only cast off corrupt people, but ANYTHING unclean in my presence, and extended out to some radius (I’m not sure how far it was, but at least as far as I could see). It cast off illness and infections in those around me (I no longer had my health problems either), and rebellious elements within the earth or injuries the bugs or the plants around me had endured. All rebellious particles or cells, any spirits that were unclean, any feelings of fear (including MINE), doubt, despair, sadness, jealousy, envy…. EVERYTHING that was not pure or from the Lord, was cast out, and only the light, righteous, and pure remained.”

This technique he taught me wasn’t a blessing or a ritual or a chant – with a caveat or disclaimer saying: “if it be the will of God”, it was a literal power that when activated, would not allow impurities or things inconsistent with the perfect balance of the universe to remain.

In the scriptures, we read about the many miracles the Savior performed including the miracles of healing the sick and raising the dead; He “heal[ed] the sick, cleanse[d] the lepers, raise[d] the dead, [and] cast out devils” (Matthew 10:8).  As recorded in this same chapter, He taught His apostles to go forth and do the same. In Luke 22, we read about the servant of the high priest whose ear was cut off with a sword. The Savior touched the place where his ear used to be, and literally re-generated a new one. In John 4, we read the account of the Savior healing a man’s son – from another city, without seeing or touching the boy. Of course we are all familiar with the account in John 11 where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. A simple search of the New Testament on Lds.org/scriptures using the word “heal” will bring up pages of examples of the miraculous healings the Lord performed. The Savior did these things as He served and succored others, but also to teach us by example – as He taught His apostles, to go and do likewise:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”  (John 14:12, emphasis added)

God has so blatantly and earnestly extended the invitation for us to do all the Savior did – including the admonition to perform these kinds of miracles. He even bulleted many of the spiritual gifts He’s given to man in the scriptures. The Savior demonstrated all of these gifts, and we are told to covet or yearn to posses them (1 Corinthians 12:31). I want to expound further on the gifts of healing, of being healed, and the working of miracles as noted D&C 46:19-21 (see also 1 Corinthians 12, and Moroni 10):

“And again, to some it is given to have faith to be healed

And to others it is given to have faith to heal

And again, to some is given the working of miracles;”

I came across this video on a website I frequent (thespiritscience.net) that shows an incredible demonstration using the power of belief and meditation to heal a life-threatening cancerous tumor within just a couple of minutes, right before your eyes. Gregg Braden discusses the power behind this spiritual technique used in Eastern Medicine, and explains some of the “spiritual science” responsible for the success of the healing.  It’s well worth the nine and a half minutes to watch:

As I watched this video, the scriptures above came to mind, and I was also reminded of what the angel was trying to teach me. Here it is on video – using the power activated by their faith, the woman was almost immediately healed.  As Mr. Braden explains, if the woman’s faith and belief was great enough, she could have just healed the tumor herself.

So why – after countless blessings, am I still plagued with with this disease I’ve carried for 15 years now? Why does my son still suffer with his various health problems? To take it even further and accept personal responsibility, why am I unable to simply DO what this angel taught me – to heal others; to do what the Savior demonstrated for us; to do what the scriptures teach us – and cast out those rebellious elements causing pain and sickness in those I love as well as in myself? Once again, God reminds me of my weaknesses so that I might overcome them, and spells out the answer here:

“And all these gifts come by the Spirit of Christ; and they come unto every man severally, according as he will

And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that every good gift cometh of Christ

And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that all these gifts of which I have spoken, which are spiritual, never will be done away, even as long as the world shall stand, only according to the unbelief of the children of men

Wherefore, there must be faith; and if there must be faith there must also be hope; and if there must be hope there must also be charity

And except ye have charity ye can in nowise be saved in the kingdom of God; neither can ye be saved in the kingdom of God if ye have not faith; neither can ye if ye have no hope

And if ye have no hope ye must needs be in despair; and despair cometh because of iniquity

And Christ truly said unto our fathers: If ye have faith ye can do all things which are expedient unto me

And now I speak unto all the ends of the earth—that if the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done away among you, it shall be because of unbelief.”  (Moroni 10:17-24, emphasis added.)

I have a dear friend who is plagued with frequent and debilitating migraines.  As I suffer from the same thing, we have traded many remedy ideas and suggestions to help each other through these times. This week, he told me that he was again, suffering. Thinking about these things above, I had an idea that I wanted to try out with my good friend I trust and love. I thought about the shield I learned about after the angel taught me that evening, and the light, and all that he showed me regarding these spiritual gift I’ve been given and need to develop and use. I focused on my friend and brought him inside of my shield and then meditated awhile.  I concentrated on emitting that light toward my friend so the negative elements causing his pain would be cast out – just like the angel showed me, and I BELIEVED that it would heal him.  I sent a text to my friend and told him I had brought him into my shield, and was “working on that thing the angel taught me…”. I continued focusing on casting out his illness, and within minutes he texted me back and began a series of texts, thanking me – as the pain had begun to “dampen” and eventually left him! Frankly, I think I’m more amazed than anyone else might be…

It may have been premature of me to post this story about my friend – as I certainly am no healer; I’m merely stumbling along attempting to carry out what God sent an angel to teach me (clearly it must be important for Him to go to that much trouble…). But the point I wanted to illustrate is that belief, and further – faith, are so utterly important in everything we do in this life, that life would literally be non-existent without them. Referring back to Moroni 10; the fact that we have so little power in using these spiritual gifts God gave us is purely “because of unbelief”!

Lectures on Faith – the book of scripture that was originally the doctrine portion of the Doctrine & Covenants, teaches us how fundamentally important faith is and elucidates this by explaining:

“…the principle of power which existed in the bosom of God, by which the worlds were framed, was faith; and that it is by reason of this principle of power existing in the Deity, that all created things exist; so that all things in heaven, on earth, or under the earth, exist by reason of faith as it existed in Him.

Had it not been for the principle of faith the worlds would never have been framed, neither would man have been formed of the dust. It is the principle by which Jehova works, and through which he exercises power over all temporal as well as eternal things. Take this principle or attribute–for it is an atribute–from Deity, and he would cease to exist.

Who cannot see, that if God framed the worlds by faith, that it is by faith that he exercises power over them, and that faith is the principle of power? And if the principle of power, it must be so in man as well as in the Deity?” (LOF, Lecture First, 15-17, emphasis added.)

EVEN GOD HIMSELF must posses and employ faith in order for His powers of creation and beyond to operate! The Lord tried to teach Peter the utter importance of this principle of power as He demonstrated his ability to walk upon the water. When Peter failed and began to sink, He didn’t offer a sermon about his lack of attendance to church meetings, or the misuse of colorful metaphors in his speech, or harp about a proper haircut and dress code. The one simple element1779180_10152235109020851_1042310632_n Peter lacked in order to do exactly as the Savior did, was faith.

Faith to heal…

Faith to be healed…

Faith to work miracles…

The brother of Jared obtained this kind of faith; the faith to literally compel the blessing of bringing the Lord Himself into his presence. D&C 130:20-21 teaches us this:

“There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—

And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”

If the law decreed in heaven which requires fulfillment in order to utilize spiritual gifts is faith – as the scriptures teach us (see again Moroni 10), then obtaining and using that faith will compel the heavens to oblige and facilitate those gifts!

So HOW do we develop the kind of faith to employ these spiritual gifts and work miracles as the Savior did, and HOW do we overcome the level of unbelief that keeps us so far from God and becoming like Him? That may be a topic for another post – or ten…  However, I have committed myself to practicing and working to strengthen my faith and overcome my own lack of belief. Sometimes this kind of practice requires letting go of paradigms and comfort zones and traditions, and believing in things that are utterly foreign to us – and accepting the scriptures as true and literal accounts, rather than seeing them as ancient tales or metaphors or parables that don’t directly apply to us. Overcoming our disbelief might require an exercise like filling the bathtub and stepping in with full faith and belief that we can stand upon that water like the Savior did – and trying it over and over, no matter how many times we fall in, and no matter how silly we feel doing so. It might require being brave when giving blessings to the sick and having the faith to call down the powers of heaven without the caveats and disclaimers – fully expecting and compelling the healing to take place. It might require meditating and practicing what that angel taught me about emitting this light from within me – where no unclean thing can dwell – every time my friend gets a migraine, and with pure faith, expecting that it will be cast out. This is exactly what I intend to do.

  1. Beautiful, Jules. I especially like the reference to that light emitting from the place where no unclean thing can dwell. I think I can sink my spiritual teeth into that!

Oh, yeah – I LOVE YOU!

  2. Wow, I loved, loved, loved this post!! Especially the clarity with which you convey these (important) things. This totally spoke to me when you wrote, “we are told to covet or yearn to posses them (1 Corinthians 12:31).” Wow. I too have been earnestly striving to let go of false traditions and the Spirit is beginning to teach me slowly, new and exciting things. What an adventure we’re on here. How exciting indeed! 🙂

  3. Great post! So … maybe heal the CAUSE of his migraines? Rather than each one as they come…? Same thing with you and your son. Something is out of balance. YOU may not know what, but the body being healed does as does God. So I would try setting the body in it’s proper order and give those parts of the body all the Love and Charity you can muster. Then ask them to do their job. They know how, they may just need extra love and support. For me, I have had trouble repeating things … like maybe I can stand on the water one time, but not another… not sure why still.

  4. Thanks for this. The Lord told me that I need to develop the kind of faith it takes to literally move mountains … your thoughts on practicing resonate with me. I like it. 🙂

  5. “It may have been premature of me to post this story about my friend – as I certainly am no healer; I’m merely stumbling along attempting to carry out what God sent an angel to teach me”.

I think we need much more of this kind of transparency in people. As cool as it could be, I don’t need to see a fully functioning faith-filled follower (yep, I’m ridin’ that alliteration train) raising people from the dead. I want to see some as they stumble and fumble as they develop gifts of the spirit.

Seeing the progressive growth, along the way with bumps and lumps is how I learn best. And if you really mess something up, I know not to do it that way 😉

  6. Thanks, Jules. How timely your comments. I had a similar experience over the weekend in “practicing” these gifts. Your insight inspires me to keep on the path until my faith strengthens and becomes sufficient.

  7. Jules:
You not only have a wonderful “handle” on spiritual things that are the “greater things”, but also a knack of writing them down so that they are very understandable. Thank you for your courage and please keep it up.

    1. Ha ha ha! I actually need to get better at meditating, myself! I don’t know if it comes naturally to most people, I think it’s something that requires practice. I saw a quote the other day that said something like: “Praying is talking to God. Meditating is listening to God.” I’m working on learning to shut off the rest of the world and listen 🙂 .

  8. Jules, you are such an amazing, loving and faithful woman of light! I am so gratful that Jana May sent this post to me. It brought me to tears. I learned much about my own journey through the spirit. Thank you for sharing your own beautiful spirit with all of us. God bless you!

  9. Lecture 7, Paragraphe 3: How Faith Works” 1. By mental exertion instead of by physical force. 2. In spoken words. The entire Lectures on Faith is about this kind of faith. God Bless you. Keep up the work (mental exertion in words).
